The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success

by Deepak Chopra, Amber Allen Publishing,

San Rafael, CA., 1994

"When you work, you are a flute through whose heart

the whispering of the hours turns to music.  And what

is it to work with love? It is to weave the cloth with threads

drawn from your heart, even as if your beloved were to

wear that cloth..."   Kahlil Gibran,  T he Prophe t

Based on natural laws which govern all of creation, this

compact book shatters the myth that success is the result of hard

work, exacting plans, or driving ambition.  Chopra offers a life-

altering perspective "once we understand our true nature and

learn to live in harmony with natural law, a sense of well-being,

good health, fulfilling relationships, energy and enthusiasm for life

and material abundance will spring forth".  Chopra, medical doctor

and renowned author (ie.,Quantum Healing, Unconditional Life

and many others), defines true success as the experience of the

miraculous, the unfolding of the divinity within us and the

perception of wholeness and oneness wherever we go.

"Law is the process by which the unmanifest becomes manifest.

The  s ource of all creation is divinity (spirit); the  p roces s  of creation

is divinity in motion (mind) and the  object of creation is the physical

universe (physical body). Together, law is 'consciousness in motion'."

1. Law of Pure Potentiality : When we recognize that our true

Self is one of pure potentiality (consciousness seeking expression),

we align with the power that makes everything manifest in the

universe.  We need to experience 'Self-Referral', where our

internal reference point is our own spirit, not the objects of our

experiences.  We can access our potentiality by silence (giving

ourselves time to be), by meditating and communing with nature,

and by being non-judgmental.

"All relationship is a reflection of your relationship with yourself."

2. Law of Giving (and Receiving): Giving and receiving are

different aspects of the flow of energy and the dynamic exchange

of the universe.  We need to develop our willingness to  g i v e  that

which we seek; this keeps the abundance of the universe

circulating in our lives. The author encourages us to "feel joy in

the very act of giving" and to realize that "the easiest way to get

what you want is to help others get what they want".

3. Law of Karma--"Cause and Effect":

"Every action generates a force of energy that returns to us in like kind;

we sow what we reap. And when we choose actions that bring happiness

and success to others, the fruit of our karma is happiness and success."

We are choice-makers.  We need to ask ourselves "What are the

consequences of this choice I am making? Will it bring happiness

to both me and those around me?  We need to make decisions

with our heart as well as our mind.  In dealing with past karma,

we need to (a) pay our debts, (b) transmute or transform the

karma to a more desireable situation by learning from the

experience, and (c) transcend it by experiencing spirit and by

meditating on it over and over again.

4. Law of Least Effect:

"Nature's intelligence functions with effortless ease...with carefreeness,

harmony and love. When we harness the forces of harmony, joy and love,

we create success and good fortune with effortless ease."

Nature is non-linear, holistic, spontaneous and nourishing, so, too

our actions need to be motivated by giving nourishment (love).

Learn to operate from:

(a) Acceptance--commit to accepting everything and everyone as

they are; "this moment is as it should be";

(b) Responsibility--not blaming anyone/anything; realize your

reality is only an interpretation;

(c) Defenselessness--do not defend your point of view, instead be

open to all points of view.

"The past is history, the future is mystery, and this moment is a gift.

That is why this moment is called 'the present'."

5. Law of Intention and Desire: Energy and information exist

everywhere in Nature.  In Nature, everything correlates and

connects with everything else.  Attention energizes and intention

transforms. Your intent is for the future, but your attention is in

the present; realize your soul-felt intentions and hold to them

with unbending purpose.

"Inherent in every intention and desire is the mechanics for its fulfillment..

intention and desire in the field of pure potentiality have infinite organizing

power. When we introduce an intention in the fertile ground of pure

potentiality, we put this infinite organizing power to work for us."

6. Law of Detachment:

"In detachment lies the wisdom of uncertainity..in the wisdom of uncertainity

lies the freedom from our past, from the known, which is the prison of past

conditioning. And in our willingness to step into the unknown, the field of

all possibilities, we surrender ourselves to the creative mind that orchestrates

the dance of the universe."

In order for one to acquire anything, one must realize their

attachment to it.  Keep your intention, but give up your

attachment to the result. We must (a) detach by allowing others

and things to be as they are, (b) keep uncertainity as an essential

ingredient in experience, and (c) remain open to all possibilities

and to new excitement.

7. Law of Dharma-Purpose in Life:

"Everyone has a purpose in life, a unique gift or special talent to give to others.

When we blend this unique talent with service to others, we experience the

ecstasy and exultation of our own spirit, which is the ultimate goal of all goals."

Each of us is here for three purposes: (a) to discover our true Self

and to find out that our true Self is spiritual; "we are spirited

beings in human form"; (b) to express our unique talents, and (c)

to be of service to humanity; "how can I help?" is the internal

dialogue of the spirit.

"There is a natural sequence for the application of these laws in

your daily life..The  L a w   o f  P u r e  P o t e n t i a l i t y is experienced

through silence, meditation, non-judgment, and through

communion with Nature, but it is activated by the  L a w  o f  G i v i n g.

The principle here is to learn to give that which you seek. That is

how you activate the L a w  o f  P u r e  P o t e n t i a l i t y .    Through your

actions in the  L a w  o f   G i v i n g , you activate the  L a w  o f  K a r m a . You

create good karma and good karma makes everything in life easy.

You notice that you don't have to expend a lot of effort to fulfill

your desires--an understanding of the  L a w  o f  L e a s t  E f f o r t .   This

leads to an understanding of the  L a w  o f  I n t e n t i o n   a n d   D e s i r e .

When your desires are fulfilled with effortless ease you can

practice the L a w  o f  D e t ac h m e n t  . This leads you to understand that

your true purpose in life is spiritual--L a w  o f  D h a r m a . By

expressing your unique talents and fulfilling the needs of your

fellow humans, you begin to create what you want and need. Your

life becomes an expression of unbounded love."

"You are what your deep, driving desire is...

As your desire is, so is your will,

As your will is, so is your deed,

As your deed is, so is your destiny."

Brihadaranyaka Upanishad IV 4:5
